- Alabama inventor - Subject of obituary is also included in the library's Alabama Inventor Database
- Almost illegible - Although clear enough to determine the name of the deceased, a photocopy of the obituary will likely not be clear enough to read; sections may be totally illegible
- Announcements/Deaths - Classified section of the newspaper; print is smaller than in the main body of the newspaper; found in the Birmingham News only
- Article/obit - A newspaper article that is primarily about the circumstances of a person's death or his achievements and includes either family or funeral information
- Infant - Generally, a child under two years of age, or designated as an infant in the text of the obituary
- Joint obituary w/ - An obituary that includes information about more than one person, usually members of the same family; sometimes victims of an accident
- Light print - Although legible, a photocopy of the obituary may not be as dark as most
- Photo w/ caption - A photograph of the deceased with brief information; not a complete obituary
- Resolutions - A formal acknowledgement of a person's death; usually contains no family and funeral information; found in the Methodist Christian Advocate only; Example
- Tribute - An acknowledgement of a person's death; usually contains little or no family and funeral information; found in the Methodist Christian Advocate only; Example
- Very brief - Obituary is only one or two lines with little or no family information
- Very light print - Barely legible, sections of obituary photocopy may not be legible
